katcanny
Hi everyone, i have gained 15 kilos quite rapidly and I have the propranolol to thank for that, but I need it so I am asking everyone for their tips on keeping their weight gain down and what dietary things they have tried to help. My specialist keeps saying it’s ok it will help my blood pressure to stabilise but diabetes runs in my family and I am concerned about too much weight gain! Not to mention that none of my clothes fit anymore and I feel yuck about myself 15 kilos is a huge difference to gain in a couple of months. thanks for listening xx
vepa
I've found that after taking a medication for awhile, my body adjusts to it. So I gain a lot of weight in the beginning, but then after my body gets used to it, my weight becomes more stable. Then it's just about losing the weight I gained, which can be done by healthy eating and exercise if you can tolerate it. Personally, I don't like fad diets, so it's never about any specific rules about what I can and can't eat. I just monitor my calorie intake via the fitbit app, which will calculate how much you can eat each day to achieve your goal weight. You can also schedule an appointment with a nutritionist if you want some advice specific to your body. I will say, if your doctor is not too concerned, I wouldn't be either. It's much more important to be healthy than thin.
katcanny
I completely agree with you Vepa I couldn’t care less about being thin I’m just concerned about the weight gain and that diabetes runs in my family being overweight can cause diabetes. I will try the calorie counting I’m just wondering what food plans people have found helped like gluten free or sugar free. I don’t want to diet as I’m feeling the best I ever have in a year I’m worried I’ll go backwards. Thank you for replying 😊
m@t
I'm exactly the same and it correlated well with the start of propranolol. In some ways its almost like the heavier I am the better I feel dysautonomia wise. Strangely dieting seems to make symptoms flare up. It will be good to hear how you get on. katcanny
Thank for replying M@t, i will try to cut out any junk foods and calorie count over the next week and give an update. I just want to be healthy and I don’t see how being overweight is good for my heart health just because it helps my blood pressure stabilise. It’s like a double edged sword! Lily
I don't know if it will make you lose weight, but surely eliminating all processed food will result in a healthier diet with greater nutrient density. I also recommend avoiding seed oils (corn, soy, canola, peanut, sunflower, etc), because they have way too much omega 6 fatty acids (too much promotes inflammation). Focus on real food instead, the kind your great-grandmother would recognize. No more edible food-like substances! Also, if you're worried about diabetes, perhaps try limiting carbs. m@t
Katcanny, hows things going now?
katcanny
Hey m@t, still piling on the weight haha! I thought it best to wait until after the holiday period to watch my calories so starting this coming week I’m going to be all over it! I hate the way my body feels and looks and I’m starting to have a flare up so that’s not helping either. Have you found anything helpful with weight loss? I hate that propranolol did this to me but it makes me able to function as a somewhat human being
m@t
Sadly the same as you! I am thinking of experimenting with adjusting the propranolol dose on a day by day basis depending on symptoms rather than a flat dose. How much are you on at the mo? Whats your resting HR? Lets hope your flare up isnt too bad.
katcanny
I’m on 3x 10mg tablets daily. I take fludrocortisone aswell but I was on that for a year before starting propranolol and no weight gain at all. My specialist wants me to cut back on my meds but I’m worried that I will go back to not being able to function. My chest pain has been bad the past week I’m thinking it might be from the extra weight I’m carrying a though. It’s very frustrating I would like for a day or two to not worry I’m having a heart attack. How have you been doing?
Missy M
Like many of us my nervous system works much more normally when I’m chest deep in the low gravity environment of water. Getting in water and exercising has helped me to stop gaining weight, plus gradually lose some of the weight I gained from having to be so sedentary. WinterSown
Last month I needed to up my nutrition so I joined WW online. I keep my focus on nutrition as a means to help me feel better and it does. Overall I feel much better, my complexion is better, motility is a lot better (yay!) and I have more energy as well. And, because I kept the focus on getting healthy from what I eat, I have also magically lost some pounds without any fretting or worry. I'm there for the healthy eating aspect--it's a different point of view and it's working. It's been good for my head too, it's nice to try out some new recipes and I am making their focus fast to prep with little clean-up afterwards. I hope you start feeling better soon. mountain girl
I also had weight gain since becoming sick. I know some blame the beta blocker, some blame the florinef, I started both at the same time so not sure which to blame, lol. I just read about the new weight watcher free style program. I did not join, but you can see what their zero points food chart is on that plan, which is things like chicken, turkey, eggs, fruits and veggies. I cheated some of course over the holidays, but some how managed to lose 4 pounds in about a month just trying to reduce sugar and sugary foods, and concentrating on lean meats and veggies. Apples are especially good if you want a sweet snack, not like a cookie, but I add just a LITTLE peanut butter:) (*I really like a cookie in the evening, or the siggys yogurt if you like yogurt has less sugar but no artificial sweetners*)
katcanny
Thank you for the helpful tips I will definitely look into weight watchers online! I just got home from ER after being admitted overnight with worst than normal chest pain and pain down my arm and in my neck. One doc said I am carrying a lot of fluid I overheard a nurse saying my love is sluggish maybe that is the cause for this extra pain? What have people done for too much fluid retention?
