Florinef Question

Recommended Posts

My mom was talking to her friend, who is a doctor, about the meds I'm taking. The doctor said she would never prescribe a teenager Florinef because it can mess with hormones later in life. We have never heard of this. Has anyone else? Florinef actually seems to help my dizziness and Tachacardia so I don't really want to stop taking it...

Hi Puppy Love :)

When I first started Florinef that was my concern too but my specialist said that at such a small dose(1-2mg) we should only get the beneficial effects and not the side effects experienced at higher doses of steroids.......I am not a teenager but do have hormone imbalance issues and haven't noticed any issues with taking the florinef and it affecting my hormones...hope that helps!

Puppylove- A lot of the POTS specialists treat teens and young adults and they use Florinef, often as first line treatment. I think they would have thought it through. My MD's all seem ok with it...I am not a teen either but asked a LOT of questions about florinef before starting it.

Hi puppylove!

My endo also uses Florinef for NMH or POTS and has patients doing great on it. In my opinion age is probably not a problem, but I think it is important to know exactly how the medication works if you are taking it. I say this because I was on it for a while and I noticed too much would make my NMH and dizziness worse. For a while I felt a little better on 1/4 or 1/2 a pill per day. Then I tried increasing it to 3/4 or 1 whole pill (0.1mg) a day and it didn't work for me, I felt worse.

It does affect your hormones since the medication is a synthetic form of Aldosterone, which is an adrenal hormone our body makes ...

But I disagree with the doc, anything that helps is worth trying. But like LMG says, it's important to ask questions and really know what you are taking. Especially I think with florinef, since it is a very strong med that affect electrolyte balance, this is why people usually don't need a big dose to see a difference ...

Pretty much anything can have an effect on your hormones, even food.

That being said, it affects potassium and can cause probs with that and magnesium which could cause hormone problems.

My Cousin started it at 14 years old for POTS and is now 28 and she is fine hormone wise.

She got Thyroid cancer 2 years ago but that has nothing to do with the Florinef. May be something to do with hormones, or just that a LOT of people with Dysauto have thyroid trouble, me included.

She watches her potassium levels closely, and has tried to go off FLorinef a couple of times, and it just doesn't work. Her body just really needs it.

Is this doctor suggesting he wouldnt describe it in adrenal failure or Addisons in a teenager? LOL.

Florinef is the most prescribed medication for POTS and many disorders of orthostatic tolerance. it does have dangers and side effects but i doubt having reduced blood volume or cerebral perfusion have a long term healthy prognosis either... If it is helping you and because its usually at a very low dose I think most doctors suggest that its ok.
